The ice lolly or popsicle was unwittingly invented in 1905 by 11 year old Californian Frank Epperson who left a mixing stick in a glass of soda powder and water on his porch one winter. He initially called it the epsicle which was later to be known as a popsicle and by 1924 he was granted a patent for a ‘handled, frozen confection’
